by Joya Sarkar On February 14, 2022, DCI interns, Claire Li and Jodie Tran, presented about Instagram's Reels to the DCI team. DCIers were informed about the many benefits of reels, when to film a reel, and how to edit a reel. What are reels and why does DCI use them? Similar to TikTok videos, Instagram reels are vertical videos that are up to one minute long. Instagram has implemented reels so accounts such as @arcadiaunified and @arcadiadci can create engaging content for their audiences. What, when, and how do DCI interns film reels? Reels are a new way for DCI interns to share the variety of events and stories with the Arcadia Unified School District community. Filming for the @arcadiaunified Instagram and @arcadiadci Instagram require different approaches. For the AUSD account, interns film only the event and include actives involved, participants, and a variety of angles. For the DCI account, interns film the process of covering an event from their point of view. How do interns edit reels? Intern Jodie Tran, uses the application, Inshot, to edit her reels. Inshot has many features interns utilize, such as adding transitions, music, text, and the DCI logo. How do we gain more engagement on our reels? In order to gain higher engagement on posts, DCI interns must first understand the Instagram algorithm. It is extremely important to include at least 3 hashtags on every post, use text, use music, use transitions, and offer additional resources to viewers. DCI interns avoid using blurry footage, footage with borders, and watermarks/logos.
