FAQs
1. What are the different DCI teams and how are they organized/run?
There are many different DCI teams, each focused on a different aspect of journalism and communications. Our current teams include: podcast, newswriting, graphic design, video, social media, and the website team. All teams are led by student managers who overlook team projects and provide assistance when needed. Such teams are created at the start of each semester; interns will notify team managers if they are interested in joining their team, thus allowing managers to organize and assemble their team. With the ultimate goal of shaping well-rounded interns, DCI encourages students to join as many teams as they want.
2. Who is eligible to apply to DCI, and what are the requirements?
All Arcadia High School students who are in a good academic standing are eligible to apply. No prerequisites, or minimum GPA is required. Those with an enthusiasm in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or video production are encouraged to apply. DCI will still consider applicants with no prior experience in such fields if the students show potential and other essential qualities, such as responsibility, strong communication skills, and an overall willingness to learn.
3. How many interns are part of DCI, and how many students will be accepted each semester?
There is no set number of interns part of the program at a given time as the number of interns in DCI per semester has ranged from two to over 30. Regardless of the number of interns, students will be chosen and kept based on their dedication and effort in the program. Each semester, the number of new interns accepted will vary depending on how qualified and eager the applicants are. Even after being accepted, however, all interns--both new and returning--will undergo a mandatory one month probationary period where those who do not meet the work accuracy standards or can not prove their commitment may be cut.
4. What is the time commitment for this program?
Because the internship typically operates through projects pitched by students, there are no assignments and the time commitment varies depending on the intern’s involvement in the program. The minimum time commitment per week is about one to two hours due to the mandatory weekly meetings, though interns are encouraged and expected to spend more time working independently to cover events and complete projects.
