Over a hundred Arcadia High School students joined the school’s Orchesis Dance Company (ODC) for its biannual Open Hip-Hop Class in the Arcadia High Career and Technical Education (CTE) Building. Students of all grades and experience levels jammed out to the popular hip-hop song “I Like It” by Cardi B, Bad Bunny, and J Balvin. Choreographed and taught by ODC’s Dance Captain junior Talia Yip and junior Jenny Namkoong, the routine drew energy and optimism from participants. “We get to show people a part of our lives and what we love to do,” Yip described. “We’re allowed to share that through the Open Hip-Hop routine and teach everyone so they can experience it as well.”

By Arcadia Unified School District Digital Communications Intern Reiko Inoue The halls of Arcadia High School (AHS) are getting their annual makeover! Six new murals are being painted across the campus. While thousands of students and staff members walk by these artworks every day, not many may know about why they are there or the artists behind the pieces.
The murals are painted every fall by students in the AHS’ Art Honors classes. The tradition of murals being painted at AHS traces back all the way to the ‘80s. Earlier murals were based on the subject matters being taught in the classrooms near them, such as images of “Einstein in the math area or the Eiffel tower where the French classrooms were,” said AHS art teacher Carol Bradley. But now, students have free rein over what they paint. By Arcadia Unified School District Digital Communications Intern Sarah Wang
The Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) hosted its annual “Staff Appreciation Night” at Arcadia High School on October 5. Educators, administrators, and other staff, along with their families, were celebrated for all their hard work and dedication to the district. “When we first created this night a couple years ago, we were pushing to make an effort to show all of our staff they are a part of a big team,” Dr. David Vannasdall, the Superintendent of AUSD, said. “There are a lot of teachers that work very hard at their school site, but they don’t often get to recognize [that] we are all on the same team, even if we work at different schools. This is especially true since all the students end up at Arcadia High.” At the beginning of the night, staff members and their families were given special sideline passes that allowed them to sit wherever they pleased during the game. Staff were also able to enter in a raffle where they could win tablets, a Chromebook, and gift cards. Volunteers from Arcadia High School’s Digital Communications Internship set up photography and face painting booths at the field’s entrance for the attendees. “Bonjour les élèves et bienvenue!” teacher Christina Vaughan excitedly exclaims (“Hello students and welcome”) as her students enter Room 25 at First Avenue Middle School (FAMS). The students occupy their seats and wait attentively as Madame Vaughan, a French teacher at Arcadia High School (AHS), promptly starts the lesson. The after-school French program at FAMS, a new project for the 2018-19 school year, is the very first time any middle school in Arcadia has offered free French classes as an extracurricular activity. “Last year, I noticed that we didn't have as many kids signing up for French 1 [an introductory French class at AHS] for the second year in a row,” Vaughan explained. “I realized that something needed to be done so that students could find out how fun and awesome French 1 really is. That is why I formulated the middle school classes during the summer.” |
